The Value of the Eccles APEX Lecture Series to Southern Utah University
A study advocating for the role of interdisciplinary lectures in advancing Southern Utah University’s mission
As part of my Honors College requirements at Southern Utah University, I designed an independent study course to earn Honors credit. I chose to center my study on the Eccles APEX Lecture Series, a dynamic program of interdisciplinary talks that brings scholars and professionals from a wide range of fields to campus. I listened to and analyzed multiple lectures, comparing their content and impact to SUU’s mission and strategic plan. My goal was to demonstrate that the APEX series plays an essential role in student engagement, experiential learning, and the university’s broader educational values. This project was developed under the mentorship of Ryan Paul and Kevin Koontz, whose guidance supported both my research and academic development. I ultimately presented my findings as a poster at the Festival of Excellence, SUU’s annual student research conference, with the goal of advocating for greater awareness and institutional support of the series. Across my academic work, I am drawn to the ways universities foster interdisciplinary learning, public scholarship, and student engagement, and I value opportunities to contribute to and advocate for those spaces. This project in particular reflects my belief in the importance of accessible, enriching educational experiences that connect students to ideas beyond the classroom. This project reflects my deep interest in higher education and my commitment to being actively involved in academic communities.
